Madison Square Garden Settles Sex Harassment Suit
Perhaps learning a lesson from the Isiah Thomas sex harassment debacle, Madison Square Garden has settled a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by Courtney Prince, former captain of the New York Rangers cheerleading squad.
The EEOC had recommended that the Garden implement harassment-prevention training and pay Prince $800,000 in damages. Terms of the actual settlement were not disclosed. Identical statements released by the parties indicated that the case had been resolved “with no admission of wrongdoing on the part of any party.” The parties refused additional comment.
Prince alleged that she was fired in 2004 because she warned other members of the cheerleading squad that one of the Garden’s executives was a sexual predator. She alleged that the exec attempted to kiss her and propositioned her. She also said that management instructed the squad to be more sexually attractive by losing weight, stuffing their bras and wearing fake hair and eyelashes.
In the Thomas case, the Garden rejected a settlement offer and went to trial, resulting in a weeks-long PR nightmare and an $11.6 million verdict.
