Question of the Week

Each week, we post a thought-provoking question for your consideration.  Submit your response, see what others think and then next week we’ll give you the correct answer.

Body art continues to be a hot topic in the news.  This week’s question is based on recent real-life court cases . . .

A cashier shows up for work wearing a dozen large earrings, multiple eyebrow piercings and a highly inappropriate neck tattoo. Citing your company's dress code policy, you ask her to remove all but two of the earrings and to cover up the tattoo. She says she's a member of the Universal Church of Body Modifications and can't comply for religious reasons. You fire her and she sues. Who wins?

I think it’s the employer, as there’s a company dress code policy. Religious belief aside, they should follow that.

Thanks for the comment, Faye. Courts really struggle with “balancing” issues like this — it’ll be interesting to see how the voting turns out. Stay tuned for the answer.
