EFCA Causing Union Rift?
Rumors are swirling that the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) may be causing a rift between Change to Win (CTW) and the AFL-CIO.
CTW, a coalition of seven unions that formed to help campaign for president-elect Obama, is publicly demanding that EFCA be passed during Obama’s first 100 days in office. In light of the financial crisis, however, there is talk that the AFL-CIO may be willing to either delay the push on EFCA or compromise on the secret ballot ban in exchange for quick financial assistance to the auto and manufacturing industries.
The rift may be developing because CTW represents mostly lower-paying service jobs and is more interested in organizing new members while the AFL-CIO is more interested in protecting its existing manufacturing members’ jobs (and the dues they pay).
