Guide to June Employee Celebrations
One of the best ways to avoid needless employment law disputes is to stay in touch with what your employees are thinking, feeling and doing. As part of our never-ending quest to keep you up-to-speed on the latest developments affecting your workplace, the following is our guide to some of the lesser-known celebrations your employees might be observing this month.
CONTEST: Just to make sure you’re paying attention, I included one made-up item. The rest are very real. The first person to post a comment or send me an email at blawg@manpower.com identifying the bogus celebration will win a valuable prize.
Month-long Celebrations
- National Accordion Awareness Month
- Potty Training Awareness Month
- International Turkey Lovers Month

- National Bathroom Reading Month
Weekly Celebrations
- International Clothesline Week (6-15)

- Ugly Dog Day (26)
- Take Your Pets to Work Day (26)
- Decide to Be Married Day (27)
- Sing Happy Birthday to the Happy Birthday Song Day (27)
- Please Take My Children to Work Day (29)
What this means for employers. If your employees suddenly start leaving early, yelling “fudge” at dangerous reptiles, wielding croquet mallets, wearing coonskin caps, befriending fish, juggling staplers, guzzling root beer, sauntering jauntily, spitting seeds, setting up half-pipes in the cafeteria, doing stupid guy things, impulsively marrying one another and/or bringing accordions, turkeys, llamas and other people’s children to work, now you know why.
Enjoy the month!

It’s the “Do Some Work at Work Day” that’s the fibber.

It’s the “Do Some Work at Work Day”.
June 1st, 2009 at 10:58 am
Hello, Libby! We’ll let some others paticipate and then I’ll reveal the bogus holiday. Thanks for participating!

I like “Please Take My Children to Work Day” on the 29th. That cracks me up.

Hey Mark,
I think I’m going to have to go with “Sing Happy Birthday to the Happy Birthday Song Day” on June 27th

Interesting choices. Hard to believe that most of the ones on the list aren’t fake. Won’t say who (if anyone) has it right quite yet . . .
June 1st, 2009 at 1:34 pm
It has to be “Yell ?Fudge? at Cobras in North America Day”. This one makes no sense at all!
June 1st, 2009 at 1:39 pm
The following is not an “official” day:
Do Some Work at Work Day (21)
June 1st, 2009 at 2:01 pm
I’ll say World Sauntering Day
June 1st, 2009 at 2:13 pm
Some of the days are a real hoot, bogus or not. But the best is the fact that Potty Training Awareness Month and National Bathroom Reading Month run simultaneously! Those who have toddlers know that’s no accident. LOL!
As for the 21st (Do Some Work at Work Day), it’s sure to follow in the steps of “Labor” Day and become a paid work holiday.
June 1st, 2009 at 2:24 pm
I have to agree that it’s the “Do Some Work at Work Day” on June 21st that isn’t “real”. That’s Father’s Day and it’s Sunday, so since a vast majority of workers don’t work on Sunday, if this were a “real” day, it would fall on a Monday through Friday most likely. I thought for sure it was a couple of other days, but they checked out as “real”!

The fake has to be “National Lane Change Courtesy Day”. When was the last time you saw someone make a courteous lane change? They’s just as soon run you off the road!!
June 2nd, 2009 at 7:53 am
I am going to go with Happy Birthday Song Day.
June 2nd, 2009 at 8:33 am
I’d say the do some work at work day – only because it is the only one that the day of the week doesn’t work for the name of the holiday. Of the two Sunday ones – it doesn’t matter for Daniel Boone if his day falls on a Sunday.

Just a random guess: Doo Dah Day
Nice list.
June 2nd, 2009 at 9:12 am
Thanks for all the participation (we got a bunch of submissions via e-mail, too). Keep guessing — we’ll announce the winner tomorrow.

I’m piling on to the “Do Some Work at Work” bandwagon…

I am not sure if you gave the winner yet but I am going to guess “Fish are Friends Not Food” week. Thanks for the fun games!
June 4th, 2009 at 8:44 am
I guess…all of them.
