FMLA Military Leave Expanded
Just in case you missed it . . .
The President has expanded the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) in two areas:
Caregiver Leave. The 26 weeks of leave available for eligible family members to care for veterans has been expanded to include illnesses or injuries for up to 5 years after the veteran leaves active duty.
Exigency Leave. “Qualifying exigency leave” has been expanded to include family members of all active-duty service members, not just family members of those called up by the Reserves or National Guard.
The changes were enacted as part of the President’s Fiscal Year 2010 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). These changes are in addition to other changes to the FMLA earlier this year. Click here for a handy summary of the previous changes.
